In the poetry of epigraph Mykhaylo Orest

The title complex is the first thing the reader notice in the text, so the researching of it is very important for the understanding of writer’s intentions and the worldview. The motto as an intertextual element of the title complex, one of the main ways of realization of intellectualism strategy  inherent  to “high” modernism in Mykhaylo Orest’s poetry, is investigated in the article. The mottos from the collections of poems “The echos of years”, “Late growth” and “The guest and the adobe” are investigated. The examples of usage of mottos from different sources (Apollon Maykov, Vladimir Solovyov, Ukrainian folk historical songs, “The Tale of Igor's Campaign”) are researched, their functions are compared to each other. It is investigated that the main functions are the reader-orientation to the most important motives and problems of the texts, the actualization of cultural context, the determination associative fields and the system of interpretations. The modernistic conception of saving in sacral art represented in researched Mychailo Orest’s poems are analyzed.
